PONY DOWN!!

So I'm sure that everyone followed the TCU Horned Frogs vs SMU Mustangs football game on Friday the 24th, 2010.  Everyone knew what the final result was going to be, but we figured we would watch it anyway.  The game started off a little slow with SMU somehow holding the Frogs and taking over after the Frogs freakish large punter, Anson Kelton who is marked at 6-4–260 lbs, kicked a good one to the Ponies.  This back and forth between Kelton and SMU's punter went on for about half of the first quarter until to most everyone's surprise SMU's sophomore quarterback threw a deep bomb for a touchdown, and the first strike of the day.  All the purple people started to get a little uneasy and started to regret all the trash talking that had taken place before kick-off.  "What would we do if we lost to SMU"? "What do you think our ranking will be"?  "These guys are garbage, we can't lose the skillet."  It was like a chain reaction of mines across a mine field, blowup after blowup people were already doubting the Frogs.  Even fans!!  Though they didn't have much time to gripe when the frogs came back and scored shortly after.  At the beginning of the half the Ponies were within 4 with a score of 14-10.  They came out strong right away in the second half and intercepted Andy Dalton which led to a touchdown giving the Mustang's a 17-14 lead.  This was the case for awhile in the third quarter until Jeremy Kerley ran back an 83 yard kick-off return.  Dalton capped off the drive with an 11 yard touchdown pass to Bart Johnson.  The next series was finished off by a 9-yard touchdown run by Waymon James after Dalton completed a pair of third down conversions.  And last but not least, Luke Shivers finished off the Ponies with a 4-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Who Would Have Thought?

So this was the first week of fantasy football and all the projections had me losing to “Team Richey.”  Granted everyone is going to probably lose one game of fantasy throughout the season, but it was opening week and, “Team Richey,” is my girlfriend…so needless to say, I immediately started searching for ways to make my roster better.  I needed a new wide receiver but most of the good ones had been picked up and I had to go with some skeptical picks such as Jabar Gaffney, of the Denver Broncos and Jonny Knox, of the Chicago Bears.  Not huge picks but I felt like they were better than rookie, Mike Williams of the Tampa Bay “Shmuckaneers” and problem ridden, Devin Hestor of the Chicago Bears.  So I picked them up along with a new back-up quarterback, Mr. Carson Palmer of the Cincinnati Bengals.  After my roster changes were complete I had to decide if I was going to take a risk and put these new receivers in, or if I should go with more of a “sure bet” like, Pierre Garcon of the Indianapolis Colts and Anquan Boldin of the Baltimore Ravens.  After Thursday night’s game between the New Orleans Saints and the Minnesota Vikings I was getting beaten pretty bad.  I had one person in this game, Percy Harvin of the Minnesota Vikings who got me a whopping 1-point.  She had Brett Favre who didn’t have a very great game and only got her 8-points which isn’t really a lot for a quarterback.  So Sunday began and I was already in a hole with her Patriots defense dominating my Cincinnati Bengals.  It looked really bad until half time when Cincinnati decided to start scoring a little bit.  The one man I needed to come through for sure was, Tom Brady of the New England Patriots.  And like he always used to before his knee got destroyed, he came through for me.  Twenty-two points!  This started to get me back into it but I needed something else.  I needed a wide receiver to come up big or for my tight end, Dallas Clark of the Indianapolis Colts.  Jabar Gaffney couldn’t of helped more with a nice touchdown grab and 35 yards for 9 points, and Johnny Knox brought in a couple passes for 52 yards and 5 points.  But leave it to the crafty veteran Dallas Clark to have 80 yards receiving and a touchdown. My man!  Things were looking good for me but I couldn’t take Miss Richey out of the game because she had the superstar himself, Chris Johnson of the Tennessee Titans who got 26 points with over 140 yards rushing and two touchdowns.  Yikes…My kicker was pretty even with hers, mine had 9 points and hers had 7 but it was going to come down to the afternoon game between the Green Bay Packer and the Philadelphia Eagles.  I had Philadelphia’s running back and Richey had DeSean Jackson, an all-pro wide receiver from Philly, as well as their tight end.  Somehow, someway I ended up taking the most points.  Kevin Kolb getting injured which brought in Michael Vick changed Philly’s game plan from throwing to running and their running back brought me 13 points for me to end up winning by 10 points.  That one was too close for comfort; I need to make some trades…

A Much Longer Than Wanted Labor Day Trip To Ohio

So this weekend was a great weekend, as we all know.  The marvelous first 3 day weekend of the semester, and if you were lucky you even got your Friday off too.  So for my holiday I decided to go to my old home of Springfield, Ohio to attend my friend's wedding.  The wedding was very nice, outdoors, cool, and a beautiful background.  After the wedding was of course the reception, which was filled with tons of hand shakes and hello's from people I haven't seen in ten years.  Of course, with my luck we got stuck at a table with the cross-dressing, drunken, swingers of the town, which seems to be frowned upon in most societies and you know what they say guilty by association right.  Man did I get some looks from people that were attending the reception, who were in complete aw that we would even be associated with these kind of people, these parasites on society that sit in the back of the room and get even more hammered before the wedding then they already were.  But, nonetheless, this day wasn't about me, it was about my friend that I have known my entire life - our mom's were pregnant with us together and we were neighbors until I was at least eleven.  She had no idea I was attending which made it extra special when she saw me and realized that I had made the trip back to be there for her.  So, we had a few drinks and interesting conversations with people over a very bland dinner.  Afterwords, we ate cake and then watched the father and daughter dance.  This was about the time we were itching to leave so we made our way out saying good-byes to everyone and then finally broke free and drove home.  This being the main reason I went back to Ohio for the weekend, I decided to leave the next day (Sunday) late at night so that I could hang out with my dad and go to "The Fair at New Boston."  Knowing that our flight was at 7:55 we took our time and walked around for a few hours and then went home to pack, which took all of about five minutes.  So we watched a movie and awaited the one-hour drive to the Columbus airport.  Time finally rolls around to leave and we're off, making it there in perfect time at 6:55 one hour before the flight takes off.  Well, we walk inside and proceed to the ticket counter where we were greeted with nothing at all, no ticket agent behind the counter, no self check-in and no bag drop.  There are a few more people standing around wondering the same thing we were - what the heck is going on.  So a TSA agent walks by and I ask "excuse me, do you know where everyone is?"  With which he responded "ahh no sorry man, I've been down there all day." Perfect.  So we start to talk with people around and realize we were all on the same 7:55 flight to Dallas/Fort Worth.  Well come to find out, the time on the Internet was wrong and the flight actually was just pulling back from the gate, at 6:55.  By this time we are completely mind boggled and pissed as all hell, but it was out of our control so I call my dad to come back and pick us up to drive another hour back home.  Guess we will have to go out tomorrow, right? Well the only flight that is open on this lovely Labor Day was the 6:00 a.m. so we had to wake up at 3:30 and drive back to the airport making sure we were still there an hour early.  We finally get back to where we were the night before - and there is actually life.  So we went through the whole airport process and made it half way across the country to Fort Worth before 8:30 a.m.  After this, I can't wait for our next three-day weekend!

Going With The Flow

Disclaimer: What I write in this blog are my words and my opinions. I do not ask you to agree with everything on here, however please be courteous to anyone else who would like to comment about an issue. All I ask is for respect although know that some of these ideas may seem “radical” to you.

FINALLY…the day had come, after all these years of not knowing how to mess with this thing and not knowing what everyone was getting all up in arms about. I operated and completed my very first fantasy football draft.
Things started off pretty slow considering I got the 8th pick out of 10. I was thinking I was going to play a little risky, pick up a wide receiver or running back right off the bat. However being in the middle of a fantasy draft is like being in the middle of the Daytona 500. You just kind of sit back and make moves according to what people in front and behind you are doing, very boring and somewhat of a disadvantage if you ask me. With this in mind people started picking up quarterbacks and I didn’t want to get stuck with an over the hill type, Donavan McNabb. So I jumped on the best quarterback that hadn’t been chosen, a man that I strongly dislike for his off the field image as well as his ability to control games by yelling at the refs (much like Peyton Manning did last season), but non the less I couldn’t deny it. I had to give in and pick the man himself, Mr. Tom Brady, pretty-boy supermodel and all around good guy (but anything for the “W” right.)
After the first round picking a quarterback, I had to go after a running back or wide receiver. Looked at my opinions and decided that I should take more of a modest pick (since I’m a Bengal’s fan…) and picked up Cedric Benson, who has settled into his game and the offense very nicely the past couple of years.
Next, I felt that I needed to get a tight end or a defense considering the tight ends were going quick and someone had already started picking defenses. And as you’ll see throughout this blog, I picked up a lot of people I really don’t like in person because I am a Bengal’s fan for life. But the bait was just too much, I couldn’t control myself like a kid in a candy shop, I picked Dallas Clark from the Indianapolis Colts.
As if that didn’t make me sick enough, I ended up then picking the Ravens defense and then Ravens wide receiver Anquan Boldin. Feeling like I had completely abandoned my heritage by this point I thought I’d get back onto people I like so shortly after I added Reggie Bush and Cowboy’s own Dez Bryant.
This left me with a few more picks, so I picked up another tight end, Jermaine Gresham and a running back/wide receiver, Pierre Garcon. By this time the draft was cruising quickly and I picked up a kicker, Rob Bironas. Next, was a backup quarterback, Kyle Orton, (who might even start this year) and two more wide receivers, Mike Williams of Tampa Bay and Devin Hester of the Chicago Bears.
After the draft was over I felt like I had my head in the clouds — it was so fun. Finally, I knew what all of this fuss was about and I could finally put my “skills” to the test and prove to everyone I’m great at fantasy. Ready to go I checked who I played first, only to remember that fantasy doesn’t begin until the regular season…
